Aviation Insurance Claims

A claim doesn't have to be the worst day of your aviation life. With the right guidance and an advocate in your corner, the process can be handled efficiently and fairly.

As your aviation insurance professionals, we will assist you with your claim in every way we can — from the first call to the final settlement. Call us immediately after any incident: (800) 432-8519

What to Do Immediately After an Incident

  1. Ensure everyone's safety first.
Do not move injured persons unless there is immediate danger. Call 911 if anyone requires emergency medical attention.
  2. Do not admit fault or discuss liability.
Do not make statements about the cause of the incident to anyone other than the FAA or NTSB as required.[Source] Do not apologize in a way that could be construed as an admission of liability.
  3. Photograph and document everything — before moving the aircraft.
Take extensive photos and video of the aircraft, the scene, damage to property, skid marks, and anything else that could be relevant. Once the aircraft is moved, this evidence is gone.
  4. Gather witness information.
Collect names and contact information for all witnesses, passengers, and others involved.
  5. Call us immediately: (800) 432-8519
We'll notify your underwriter, guide you through what's required, and begin advocating on your behalf. The earlier we're involved, the better we can protect your interests throughout the claims process.
  6. Cooperate fully with the adjuster — through us.
Your policy requires cooperation with the investigation. We'll coordinate with the assigned adjuster to make sure the process goes smoothly and that your interests are protected at every step.

We're In Your Corner

Many policyholders don't realize that their broker is there to help, not just sell. When you have a claim with Alexander Aviation, we don't disappear — we get to work. We know the adjusters, we understand the policies, and we know how to advocate for a fair and efficient outcome on your behalf.

We've been handling aviation claims for our clients since 1978. Aviation claims have specific nuances — NTSB reporting requirements, maintenance release considerations, salvage rights, subrogation — that a general insurance broker may not navigate well. We do. We speak the language and we know what a fair outcome looks like.

Important Reporting Note: Accidents involving substantial damage or serious injury must be reported to the NTSB.[Source] The FAA may also need to be notified under certain circumstances. We can help you understand these requirements — call us before you file anything.

Common Claims Questions

How quickly do I need to report an incident to my insurer?

Most aviation policies require prompt notification — often within 24 to 72 hours of an incident. Call us immediately and we handle the notification to your underwriter. Don't wait to see how bad the damage is; report it right away.

Do I need an aviation-specific adjuster?

Yes. Aviation underwriters assign adjusters who understand aircraft valuation, airworthiness standards, and FAA/NTSB requirements. If a general adjuster is assigned, we'll push for a qualified aviation specialist.

What happens if the aircraft is declared a total loss?

If the repair cost exceeds the insured hull value (or a threshold defined in your policy), the aircraft may be declared a constructive total loss. You receive the agreed or stated value. We help ensure you have the right hull value in place before an incident happens — not after.

Can my policy be cancelled after a claim?

Aviation insurers can non-renew a policy after a claim, particularly for at-fault accidents. We work with you proactively — before renewal — to address any underwriting concerns and find continued coverage if needed. Our access to 20+ aviation markets helps here.
